A Linen Closet You Can Live With

Have you ever opened your linen closet and had towels fall on your head?  Are you the only one who puts laundry away in your house because you’re the only one who knows where anything goes?  This month I’m going to share a few tips for organizing your linen closet – which is a great project that you can do in an hour or two and yield big returns!

• First, take everything out and take inventory.  Now’s the time to be honest with yourself about those frayed towels that you got at your bridal shower 18 years ago, and that wool blanket that no one will use because it’s so scratchy.  Two sets of sheets for every bed in the house and two sets of towels for every person in the house (one in use, one extra) should be sufficient.  Consider donating mismatched, worn and extra linens to your local animal shelter. 
• Store like items together.  One shelf for sheets, one for towels.  Put all those loose toiletries that roll around the closet in a shelf basket.  Same for lightbulbs (something I find everywhere, though seemingly never the one I need).  Store extra blankets or comforters used infrequently on a top shelf, and protect them by storing in a storage bag.
• One of my favorite products for the linen closet is a shelf divider, to keep piles from toppling over.
• Store towels with the folded side out.  Keep entire sheet sets together, by neatly folding the flat and fitted sheets and storing inside the matching pillowcase.  If folding isn’t your thing, you can roll your linens and keep them in baskets instead.
• Label everything!   This isn’t so much for you, as it is for anyone else in the house who might put laundry away someday.  Label any baskets, and label each shelf as to its’ contents.
